Synth1 - Analogue Sounding Poly Synths

Synth 1, by Ichiro Toda, an emulation of Nordlead 2, is a 2 oscillators synth with a rather acid sound, much easier to set than Crystal, but very stable and efficient. With it, you can do many things (it has an arpeggiator, 1 stereo chorus/flanger, 1 delay, a bit of FM). Its quality and flexibility make it a very good synth. Its interface is not very nice, but it sounds very well...

The factory presets are not the best, so download better ones from KvR, Patcharena or Nolwenn (see Friend links page) where you will find many of them (it is undoubtedly the most famous free vsti). This synth is a must have too...

Oberon v.1.0 (freeware)

FREE vocal plugin

Vocal recording and effects chains include, depending on the performance, a de-esser, a noise gate, an equalizer, and a compressor. Frequently, engineers also add effects like chorus, delay, tape saturation (unless recording to tape, of course,) and reverb, to enhance the sound.
In a pro studio, most of this treatment is handled by expensive hardware and plugins (like those from Waves and UAD.) But you don’t have to break the bank to polish up your vocal tracks thanks to the many libraries of free plugins found on the Internet, most available for any DAW that supports the VST standard.
I’ve compiled a list of the best plugins for a killer free vocal chain, along with a sample of the plugins at work on one of my vocal tracks.

FREE QUEUE EQ PLUGIN

This free VST plugin is an equalizer. The sound of this EQ will very much remind you of many classic analog designs. You get access to four bands of equalization with two shelving filters and two peaking filters, a design which matches that of many sought after high-end console equalizers. Many mix recipes are included as saved settings which can be loaded through your VST host.

It was while I was looking for at 303′s on yout tube that my slothlike memory pulled out a fractured memory of a peice of software that I’d forgotten about.
In 1997 about the time I first touched a PC, the software, Propellerheads, the company that now brings you ‘Reason’ and ‘Record’ – released  ‘RebirthRB 338′  an emulation of the Roland 303.

SoundFont - free download

MuseScore comes with a special type of file called a SoundFont that tells MuseScore how to play each instrument sound. Some SoundFonts are custom designed for classical music others for jazz or pop, others are large and take up a lot of memory, still others are very small and light-weight. The latest versions of MuseScore (version 0.9.6 or higher) come with a relatively light-weight, general-purpose SoundFont called, "TimGM6mb.sf2".

Control the stereo field of lower frequencies

BassLane is a free audio effect for VST compatible hosts. It's a simple, yet very handy little utility to control the stereo field of lower frequencies in your audio material. Allows you to define the processed frequency range while using several monitoring options, and to tweak how much you want it squeezed .

What is this useful for ?

• Regain tightness in the bottom of your mix by keeping kick drums and bass lines centered in the stereo field.

• Drum tracks mixed from multiple sources, or processed with delay, reverb etc will often sound "messy" if the kick drum isn't centered. Just drop Basslane on the track.

• Experiment with effects on various tracks without losing definition and focus in the bass region.

• Very useful when mastering for vinyl records.
